Select Committee on State of Roads 1840

Mark Kennaway of Exeter (clerk to the trust) reported

There are 26 miles 5 furl 19 pl of road thru 8 parishes – all repaired by the trustees

9 toll gates and 7 side bar

The roads are stated to be in “good” condition – no part under indictment for want of repair.

The cause of the increase in interest paid in 1837/8 was that in the preceding 3 years, the trust had under an Act of parliament obtained in 1831, extended the trust, which originally had a mileage of 10 miles 6furl, to 21 miles, and in 1838 again extended it to 26 miles 5f.
