Okehampton Turnpike Road                                                 (updated 24th Sept 2013)

This was created in 1760 as a town-centred trust covering a network of roads on the northern edge of Dartmoor. Its main responsibilities were (a) the main Exeter to Plymouth Post Road from Cheriton Bishop to Bridestow (b) roads radiating from Okehampton to smaller communities along the edge of Dartmoor.  By an Act of 1829 the Trust was given powers to create a significant new road northwards towards Great Torrington, though it is unclear whether this was actually completed.
