Lyme Regis Turnpike Road – Crewkerne Division                      (updated 24th Sept 2013)

Formed as a Division of the Lyme Regis Turnpike Trust (created in 1758) Its primary responsibilities were for the road running inland from Lyme Regis to Crewkerne; except for a short section in Uplyme, this road runs along the Devon County boundary, then crosses into Dorset and finally Somerset.

J House of Commons - Reports

10 Geo III ;26 Jan 1770

Petition of several Gents, clergy, freeholders and inhabitants of Lyme Regis, trustees of TP Act of 31 Geo II – they have borrowed £4000 and applied – great progress has been made but annual income is insufficient to answer purposes

And road between Colway turnpike gate in Parish of Lyme Regis and Charmouth to TP road between Penn Inn in Parish of Whitchurch Canonicorum and Charmouth

And also road from TP road between Penn Inn and Axminster, by the Direction post at Greenway Head in Parish of Whitchurch Canonicorum by Monkton Wild Farm, over Hawkchurch Hill to the Bottle Inn in Parish of Hawkchurch and thence to Marshalsea and Furzemoor Gate in Parish of Broad Windsor and to the Three Ashes in Parish of Crewkerne, where the Crewkerne TP terminates

And also the High Road leading from the TP road on Uplyme Hill in Parish of Uplyme, across the Axminster TP, thru Red Lane to Hawkchurch Hill and divers public and private roads which evade tolls are in a ruinous state steep and uneven and in winter dangerous.

Lord Burghersh reported

To prove Mr Benjamin Follett, treasurer of trustees said £4k borrowed. Tolls produce £300/a – not sufficient to pay debt and keep roads in order – need powers to prevent evasion of tolls. Mr John Norman confirmed.

Select Committee on State of Roads 1840

George Hangeston of Lyme Regis (clerk to the Trust) reported;

There are 8 miles 35ch of road thru 6 parishes – all repaired by the parishes, not the trustees

2 toll gates and 2 side bars

The roads are stated to be “in a very bad state of repair” – no part under indictment for want of repair.

Report to Secretary of State

No. 8.—LYME REGIS ROADS.

The existing Act for these roads (the lst & 2nd of George IV. cap. 108.) was passed in the year 1821 and repealed the former Acts of the 3lst of George II., and the 30th and 40th of George III. The term of the present Act would have expired with the session of 1842, but has been extended by the several Turnpike Acts Continuance Acts until the 1st day of November 1855.

The roads belonging to this Trust were divided by the present Act into two districts, called the " Lyme Regis Branch " and the " Crewkerne Branch," of which separate accounts have been kept of the income, expenditure, debts, &c. It therefore appears desirable to state the particulars of each of these districts separately.

2. - THE CREWKERNE BRANCH

The roads belonging to this branch are about eleven miles in length, and are repaired by the several parishes through which they pass. There are two tollgates on this branch, distant respectively seven and eleven miles from Lyme Regis, clearing each other; also two bars adjoining these gates. The full rate of toll allowed by the Local Act is levied on this branch.

The debt upon this branch is £1,550, which was advanced in the year 1771, but the amount now claimed is only £800. The accounts show that the toll income has been very small, about £62. per annum, being an average of only 12s per week, or less than 2s. a day at each of the two gates. The funds have been expended in occasional repairs to toll-houses, &c.; salaries (increased from £l6 to £19 per annum) law charges ; and interest of the debt, since the year 1848, at which date the sum of -£442 7s, 6d. had accumulated in the treasurer's hand. The amount paid on account of interest during the last five years has been £648, and the total arrears of interest on the 31st of December 1853 amounted to £2,285 3s. 4d. of which a large portion was unclaimed.
