Dartmouth & Torquay Consolidated Turnpike Trust   (update 24th Sept 2013)

Formed from merger in 1823 of two Trusts that had both been created in 1765; the Keyberry Bridge, Newton to Shaldon (Woolborough & Combeinteignhead) Trust and the Newton Abbott to Kingswear, Dartmouth Trust. It was responsible for a network of roads in the coastal area between the estuaries of the River Teign and the River Dart.

Cleatland Cross to end of Aller Lane, and end of the lane on Newton Abbot to Totnes road towards Abbotskerswell and thence to Five Lanes, in the Parish of Marldon; and road from the North end of the town of Paignton to Langvers Barn, in the Parish of Marldon and from thence to the turnpike road from Newton Abbot to Totnes; and the road from Galmpton Turnpike Gate, across Galmpton Warborough, through Galmpton, to Collin's Grave (except for 120 yards by Galmpton Gate); and Eastern road from Galmpton Turnpike Gate across Galmpton Warborough, by Churston Court (except for 120 yards by the gate)

An Act for more effectually making and repairing the Roads between Newton Abbot and Brixham, Kingsweare and Dartmouth, Shaldon and Torquay, and also between Torquay and Saint Mary Church, and the Bridge to be built over the River Teign at Shaldon, and for making and repairing several other Roads communicating therewith, all in the County of Devon. [20th May 1825.]

for the Purpose of more effectually repairing, widening, altering, diverting, and from Time to Time improving and keeping in Repair the Road from the South End of the Town of Newton Abbott in the said County, to Aller Lane on the South Side of Longford Bridge in the Parish of Abbotscarswell, and also unto and across Keybery Bridge, and from  thence to the Passage House at Shaldon in the Parish of Saint Nicholas ; and also One hundred and twenty Yards of the Road leading from the East End of the  said Bridge across Milber Down towards Saint Mary Church ; and also  from  the said Bridge to Archabrook, between the said Bridge and Shaldon,  through  the Parishes of Coombeintinhead and  Stokeintinhead, or one of them; and from Keybery Bridge aforesaid through Allerparks Lane to Broadgate Bridge in Kingscarswell aforesaid, and from  thence through  the  Eastern End of the Village of Kingscarswell, and through Southey Lane in the same Parish, by Chapel Hill, to the Hotel at Torquay; and also from Torquay by Fleet Mill to the North Side of the Lime Kiln adjoining to Hoppaway Hill, in Tormoham, through the several Parishes of Woolborough, Coombeintinhead, Stokeintinhead, Saint Nicholas, Abbotscarswell, Kingscarswell, Saint Mary Church, and Tormoham, in the said County of Devon ; and also from or near to the South End of Chapel Hill in the said Parish of Tormoham, through the Parish of Cockington, and from thence across Tuckingmill, alias Hollacombe Lake, into the Parish of Paington, and unto or near to Cleatland Cross in  the same Parish,   and from thence to Galmpton Wanborougb Turnpike House, with One hundred and twenty Yards of each of the present  Roads,  from  thence towards the Villages of Goodrington and Galmpton, and, across Galmpton Warborough, and from .thence through the Parish of Churchstonferrers., by the Poor House and Lupton Gate, to Monks Bridge and Brixham Quay, through Burn Street, and through the Road near to a Dwelling House occupied by Philip Gillard, in  the said Parish of Brixham ; and also across Galmpton Warborough aforesaid, through and along Qldway Lane., the  present Turnpike Road  to Collins's Grave, and from thence to Brixham Turnpike Gate, and to the Passage House at Kingsweare aforesaid ;   and also from the  said Brixham Turnpike  Gate through the present Turnpike Road unto  Bnxham  Quay aforesaid;  and also the present Turnpike Roads from the North-west End of Torrabbey Avenue to Torre Cross, and from the lower End of Torre Village, in front of Torre Church, to Prowses Cellar-field in Tormoham aforesaid ; and also from Torquay by Torwood, across Parts of the Bartons  of Torwood and Ilsham, and  from thence by Babbicombe across Babbicombe Hill to the Village of Saint Mary Church .and  from thence through the Village of Coombpafford to Narramore Bridge, in  the  Parishes of  Tormoham  and Saint Mary Church in the said County; and  also the Road from Torre Cross in the Village of Torre, in  the said Parish of Tormoham, through Stoneycombe, and from thence through the Vale under Lummaton Hill, in Saint Mary Church, to Narramore Bridge aforesaid, and from thence across Watcombe Lane to Solomon's Post, with One hundred and twenty Yards of each of the Seven several Roads which  lead from or near to Solomon's Post aforesaid, and from  Solomon's Post across several Fields to the Lane or Road which leads from Maidencombe Cross to Maidencombe Village, and from thence by Gabwell Common Hill to Stoke Common  Hill, and from thence to the Town or Village of Shaldon, and across the Marshes lately inclosed from the River Teign, now occupied by Thomas Wills and Thomas Prideaux, or their Tenants, Home to the Scite or Foot of the said Bridge now building across the River Teign, in the several Parishes aforesaid, or  some -or One of them.

Dartmouth Ferry 1830

An Act for establishing a Floating Bridge over the Harbour of Dartmouth, from or near to Lower Sand Quay Point to Old Rock in the County of Devon, and for building Quays and Landing Places, and for making Roads and Approaches thereto, with Branches therefrom. [17th June 1830.]

There are 37 miles 6 furl 5 pl of road thru 13 parishes – all repaired by the trustees

14 toll gates

The roads are stated to be in “good” condition – no part under indictment for want of repair.

Old Newton Road; UC road from the South End of Newton Abbott to Aller Lane on the South Side of Langford Bridge, Abbotscarswell (about 2 miles), (section of UC road south to Five Lanes, Marldon and on to Paignton was de-turnpiked 1823 - about 5 miles)

Old Shaldon Road; UC road (part was B3195) across Keyberry Bridge, through Combeinteignhead  to the Passage House at Shaldon (about 4 miles); (did once include UC road up to Stoke in Teignhead)

and also part of A379 - 120 Yards of the Road leading from the East End of the Bridge across Milber Down towards Saint Mary Church ;

Archabook Road; UC road (was B3195) from Shaldon Bridge to Arch Brook, Coombeintinhead (about 1 mile);

Torquay Road; UC road from Keyberry Bridge on A380 through Allerparks Lane to Broadgate Bridge in Kingscarswell, from thence through the  Eastern End of Kingscarswell, and through Southey Lane, then as Newton Road (UC except for section of A380) by Chapel Hill, to the Hotel at Torquay (about 7 miles);

Hoppaway Hill Road;  from Torquay by Fleet Mill to the North Side of the Lime Kiln adjoining to Hoppaway Hill, in Tormoham, (Torquay centre) (about a mile)

Brixham Road; (Starts as the old road, replaced by the Torbay Road, 1840 Act) UC from South End of Chapel Hill in the said Parish of Tormoham ( by Torre Station?), then UC road (now part lost) to be Old Paignton Road and Old Paington Lane across Tuckingmill, (Hollacombe Lake), becoming  Old Torquay Road and then UC road (Oldway) into Paington, then to Cleatland Cross and from thence by A379 towards Goodrington  and Galmpton, to Galmpton Warborougb Turnpike House, and from thence as A3022 through Churchston Ferrers., by the Poor House and Lupton Gate, to Monks Bridge and Brixham Quay, through Burn Street, and through the Road near to a Dwelling House occupied by Philip Gillard, in Brixham  (about 8 miles);

Higher Brixham Road; UC (was B3206) from Brixham Turnpike Gate to Brixham Quay (about 3 miles) ; 

Torre Abbey Road; Town streets from the North-west End of Torrabbey Avenue to Torre Cross, and from the lower End of Torre Village, in front of Torre Church, to Prowses Cellar-field in Tormoham (Torquay) (about a mile);

Babbicombe Road: A379 from Torquay by Torwood, across Parts of the Bartons of Torwood and Ilsham, by Babbicombe across Babbicombe Hill to Saint Mary Church .and  from thence through Combe Pafford to Narramore Bridge,(about 2 miles);

Shaldon Road; B3199 from Torre Cross, Torre, through Stoneycombe, and from thence through the Vale under Lummaton Hill, in Saint Mary Church, to Narramore Bridge, turning north on A379 across Watcombe Lane to Solomon's Post, and on to Maidencombe Cross, and from thence by Gabwell Common Hill to Stoke Common Hill, and into Shaldon, then across the Marshes lately inclosed from the River Teign, to the Foot of Shaldon Bridge now building across the River Teign (about 7 miles)

Torbay Road; A379 from Cary Parade, under Waldron Hill, and then as A3022 above Torre Sands to Paignton (about 3 miles) (under the 1840 Act)

Note that the Tollhouse on the Teignmouth side of Shaldon Bridge did not belong to the Torquay Turnpike Trust; it was erected under the Shaldon Bridge Act.

 

Known Milestones

In the Milestone Society Database, 23 milestones are identified on the A379, B3205 B3199 and section of UC road,  – most in a design known as Torquay Plate stone, Torquay mileplate and Torquay new stone. Based on the 1840 report of the Trust mileage, would expect 38.
